The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially confirmed that modern-day batting greats Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will not retire from ODI cricket after the conclusion of the upcoming series against the Australia national cricket team.
Rajeev Shukla, vice-chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has frankly stated that the perception that the Australia tour will be the last time Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be seen playing in international cricket is completely wrong.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are gearing up for a grand comeback
The hype has reached maximum levels for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s return to international cricket after a long period of time ahead of the upcoming Australian tour.
Your daily dose of cricket!
India will tour Australia for a three-match ODI series and a five-match T20I series in October-November 2025. The Perth stadium will host the ODI series opener on October 19, with the next two matches scheduled to be played on October 23 and 25 in Adelaide and Sydney. After that, the T20I matches are scheduled to be played on October 29 and 31 and November 2, 6 and 8 at five different venues.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retired from Test and T20I cricket, and until the time they are available in international cricket, they will make only limited appearances because very few ODI matches are played these days.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were last seen playing competitive cricket in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 for Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Before this, they played for the India national cricket team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The duo put up a tremendous performance in the competition and helped India beat New Zealand in the final to win the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in UAE.
It is completely wrong to say that this is their last ODI series – Rajeev Shukla
There have been some reports that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will announce their retirement from ODI cricket as well at the end of the series against the Aussies.
These talks have made them the center of attention ahead of the tour, but so far, the duo has not given any hints regarding their farewell series. Also, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-chairman Rajeev Shukla has now confirmed that Rohit and Kohli will not retire after the Australia series.
“It will benefit us a lot. They are great batsmen. We will manage to defeat Australia with them in the team. It is completely wrong to say that this is their last ODI series. It depends on the players as to when they retire,” he told ANI in Delhi.
