Promoter Eddie Hearn is still hoping to stage the fight between former British kings, Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, in 2026.
America left years ago
While some fans in the UK are still eager to see the tired bout, American audiences are frustrated with both and view them as overly rich and symbols of manufactured fighters who were never as good as they were marketed to be.
Interest in the Fury vs. Joshua fight has long waned for many. It is beyond the stage of rot because the match has been talked about for more than 10 years. Neither of them wanted to fight when it really mattered, when they were still in their twenties. From the way both of them have looked the last three years, I find it unfortunate that the match is happening now.
Why should we care anymore?
The rivalry meant something five years ago when they were still at the top of their game, but neither is close to the top level at this point. Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) has lost his last two fights and looks 37 years old.
At this point, Joshua and Fury were inactive, both dealing with devastating losses. Not sure which one it was
Their net worth is more than $100 million each, and if they fight, they would both see their bank accounts swell by at least another $100 million.
Hearn’s expensive four-fight rebuild for Joshua was a complete failure, as he was obliterated in his last fight when he faced semi-respectable fighter, Daniel Dubois, in September 2024.
Hearn Golden Pension Plan
Hearn is clearly still interested in the fight. The question is whether Turki Al-Sheikh is willing to pay the high price to put the Fury vs. Joshua fight together. I don’t see why he does that. It’s a fight that will only resonate with boxing fans in the UK, not around the world. Americans don’t rate them, and I’m not sure they ever do.
Fury’s best win is Klitschko, and the closest second best is Deontay Wilder. What does this say about the anger of the “Gypsy King”? It was never the real thing.
Eddie Hearn said: “The thing AJ wants more than anything is to fight Tyson Fury.” Sky Sports.
“I think Turki Al-Sheikh is probably the only guy who could fight Tyson Fury because both guys would want a huge amount of money. The biggest fight in the sport is Anthony Joshua versus Tyson Fury,” Hearn told ESPN.
