Why the SB 53 in California may provide a meaningful examination of the great artificial intelligence companies

California’s Senate recently gave final approval of the new artificial intelligence intelligence bill, SB 53, Send it to the ruler Gavin New Zoom Either to sign or veto.

I got a chance to discuss SB 53 with my colleagues Max Zev and Kirsten Corussec in the latest episode of The leading podcasts in Techcrunch. Max believes that the new Wiener bill has a better snapshot to become a law, and this is partly due to the focus of the large company, and also because it was It was supported by Ai Company Anthropic.

Top: Why should you care about the safety of artificial intelligence that passes a room in California? We enter this era as artificial intelligence companies have become the most powerful companies in the world, and this will be one of the few checks on its power.

This is much narrower than SB 1047, which got a lot of decline last year. But I believe that SB 53 still puts some meaningful regulations on artificial intelligence laboratories. It makes them publish safety reports for their models. If they have an accident, this is mainly forced them to report this to the government. Also, for employees in these laboratories, if they have concerns, they give them a channel to report this to the government and not to face companies’ retreat from companies, although many of them have signed NDAS.

For me, this looks like a possible examination of the strength of technology companies, something we have not already faced over the past two decades.

Kirsten: To your point of view on the reason for the importance of this at the state level, it is important to think about the fact that it is California. Each major Amnesty International company, if not based here, has a great imprint in this state. Not that other countries do not concern – I do not want to receive emails from people in Colorado or anything else – but it is important to be specifically California because it is already a center for artificial intelligence activity.

My question though, Max, does it seem to be a lot of exceptions and sculptures. It is narrower, but is it more complicated than before (the bill)?

Top: In some respects, yes. I would like to say that the main sculpture of this law is that he really is trying not to apply for small startups. I don’t think any of this has passed yet, but they will likely try to get this in the future. So this can be another front in which the Trump administration and blue countries fight.
