Why Michigan community formed a human chain to transfer 9100 books, one at one time

The move is easy when you get 300 of your closest friends to help.

When SERENDIPITY in Chelsea, Michigan, need to transfer 9,100 books to the new store’s website, one bloc, they collected a volunteer “book banner” to form a human chain, pass each book, one by one, to his new home.

“People were singing. They were telling the stories. They were reviewing the books while they were moving. As you know, there was a lot of excitement with their arrival in the romantic section. It was very fun.”

Toplin said that the coincidence did not do so to save money or work. In fact, I rented the engines to come the next day of the Ministry of Books.

“We had a lot of offers on how people wanted to help, and we really wanted to be able to involve people in a meaningful way, and a comprehensive way as well,” she said.

“Society really feels ownership of chance books, as I think, with many independent libraries.”

When she took the call in January, she says she has no idea about the number of people who will appear in the end, and whether they are able to pull it.

But she says that many people responded to the invitation that they did not form, but rather two human series, and everything was done in almost two hours.

“It was part after the other, and the crazy thing is that, in fact, the elements remained mostly in the right part and alphabetical arrangement,” Toplin said.

“So for us in the new space, as you know, there is no actually the absence of boxes or rearrangement, and re -symmetry. It’s really organized.”

Kaci Friss, 32, who works in Books Serndipity, has grew up in Chelsea, a community of about 5,300 population, 95 km west of Detroit. She said that the event reminded her of “how special” is the community.

“People are really looking for each other,” Faris said. “Wherever you go, you will enter someone you know or who knows you, and will ask you about your day.”

The store reopens on its new location on April 26, which falls on an independent library day.

TUPLIN admits that the library is “a difficult work”. But she says that people in Chelsea have always been in chance books.

“People realize that they want these books in their societies. They know the meaning of the independent library in society.”

“This means the participation of society. This means discussing society, reaching various books, and all of these great things. It seems that people know that if this is what they want, they should support the library.”
