Why is Den Of Thieves 2 called Pantera?

For his sequel, writer-director Christian Gudegast has expanded the scope significantly. While the first film was a badass cops-and-robbers thriller in Los Angeles, the sequel heads to Europe for a much bigger score, leaving plenty of room for more sequels to come (hell yeah, bring them on).

Interestingly, this sequel doesn’t just have a plain simple title. Instead, Den of Thieves 2 has a subtitle: “Pantera.” But why? I think the sarcastic answer might be “because it looks so cool.” Seeing “Pantera” probably makes one think of the heavy metal band of the same name. Unfortunately, “Den of Thieves 2” doesn’t have a subplot about Big Nick teaming up with the band for a rock band. Instead, there’s a different reason for the subtitles, although to be honest, it seems somewhat arbitrary and unnecessary.

“Pantera” actually means “tiger,” and that’s where the title in “Den of Thieves 2” comes into play. In “Den of Thieves 2”, Donnie teams up with a gang of highly skilled jewel thieves who call themselves the Panthers. These characters are actually inspired by a real-life gang of thieves known as The Pink Panthers, inspired by A comedy film series of the same name. In “Den of Thieves 2”, these crooks have a reputation so bad that there is an entire section of the French police force tasked with tracking them down. This division is known as the Pantera Task Force. So there you have it: This is why “Den of Thieves 2” is subtitled “Pantera.”

However, it’s also worth noting that the Pantera division plays an incredibly small role in the film as a whole. Early in the film, Big Nick heads to Europe and meets the cop heading up the Pantera unit, French police chief Hugo Camman (Yassine Zatz-Ator). But Hugo is a very small player here. Without giving away any spoilers, I will say that the end of the movie reveals that Hugo has been working a bit behind the scenes, but even with that in mind, it’s still weird to give the movie the subtitle “Pantera.” I can’t help but go back to what I said above: they used this subtitle simply because it sounded cool and they didn’t think much of it. And you know what? This is good. The film still rips.
