“It was really serendipitous because we had been working for months and months on bringing these actors to the show. Preston praised Colbert Attitude while on set.
She continued: “He was a great actor. He was so much fun to play with and he was everything you could want and more.” “I’ve been a huge fan of Amy Sedaris for a long time. I’ve only met her socially once or twice. So, to be on the show, she was so funny and the crew loved her. I was basically begging her to be my girlfriend in the end. I think she’s amazing.”
“And then Andy Richter, too,” Preston continued. “He played the talk show sidekick but he was the talk show sidekick forever (with Late Night, The Tonight Show and Conan). But they are all different personalities. I thought it was really cool and the timing was so good that they were all available to come and play with us.
The season three premiere, which airs Sunday, October 12, follows Elspeth as she investigates tensions in the world of late-night comedy between a talk show host (Colbert), his head writer (Sedaris) and her husband (Richter).
Sunday’s episode also introduces new Officer Grace Hackett (Lindsey Mendez), one of the many police officers that Elspeth will work with after that (Kara Patterson) Leave For a secret opportunity.

“(This season) is working well with the detectives. But with every case Elspeth goes on, it’s not going to be the same detective every time. So we already had this setup with different detectives stepping in and now we’re doing the same thing with the uniformed officers,” Preston explained. “You’re going to connect with people in different ways.”

“It keeps the show fresh and keeps Elspeth on her game more. She’s working with new, younger people and people she’s never met before. So she’s getting to know people,” she noted. “I don’t know if we’ll ever get to just one. Anything can happen. But I really like the new people we’re working with now.”
Elspeth Season 3 premieres on CBS on Sunday, October 12 at 9:30 PM ET. New episodes air the next day on Paramount+.
