In the wake of Sriram Krishnan’s recent appointment as AI advisor to the Donald Trump administration, social media platforms in the US have seen an alarming rise in anti-India sentiment. A particularly disturbing video circulating on X (formerly Twitter) exemplifies this trend, showing an American man requesting signatures from Indian citizens in the US to “stop the spread of the H1B virus.”

The video, posted by user Alex Rosen, shows him approaching several Indian-owned businesses and asking patrons to sign a petition aimed at stopping what he disparagingly refers to as the “H1B virus.” When asked about the symptoms of this supposed virus, he strangely claimed that they included “diarrhea” and “odor,” stressing that it “originates from India.” The video concludes with a provocative challenge to Donald Trump to “be a man.”

Since its release, the video has received more than a million views, sparking polarized reactions online. The man’s supporters praised his actions, while many others condemned the video as overtly racist.

Comments range from harsh rebukes, with one user saying: “You’re a terrible little man.” “Indians are a hardworking people, and America wouldn’t exist without them,” to others admiring the campaign, calling it an “epic troll.”

Another person commented: “If you really want to stop this, go to the corporate offices and ask the CEOs to sign it. Why are you harassing a few small shop owners? The video and your action show your ignorance of the H1B visa.”

The growing hostility toward H-1B visa holders reflects a broader trend of rising tensions regarding immigration in the United States. Many Indian immigrants face a backlash, fueled by extremist narratives that claim they are “stealing” American jobs.

Sen. Bernie Sanders has waded into the fiery debate over high-skilled immigration, taking aim at Elon Musk, Vivek Ramaswamy, and MAGA conservatives who support the H-1B visa program. In a statement issued Thursday, the Vermont senator and former Democratic presidential candidate bluntly criticized the H-1B visa program, calling it a tool for corporate exploitation rather than innovation.

“The main function of the H-1B visa program is not to recruit ‘the best and the brightest,’ but to replace good-paying American jobs with low-wage servants from abroad,” Sanders said. He accused companies of using the system to cut costs, laying off American workers while hiring cheaper foreign labor. “The cheaper the labor they hire, the more money billionaires make,” he added.
