Walmart is doubling down on its grocery shopping efforts while traditional rivals thrive

Walmart is doubling down on its grocery business as more consumers turn to the company for their nutritional needs.

The company has built new, modern stores and remodeled hundreds of others. Over the past three years, it has remodeled about 700 stores each year on average, and plans to transform more next year. The company’s new and updated stores include improved layouts, greater product selection, and updated signage, paint and shopping carts.

Aside from her improved aesthetic, Rainey has also credited her own branding as another driver. Walmart is seeing an increase in private label brands as a larger share of total sales, driven in part by consumers’ focus on price during high inflation. Earlier this year, the company launched its newest and largest private label, Bettergoods, which includes 300 products including frozen products, dairy products, snacks, beverages, pasta, soup, coffee and chocolate.

Not only does the company offer a wider range of foods under the private label, but the quality of the food has also improved, Rennie said.

“It’s much broader and attracts a much greater number of customers and members,” Rennie said, adding that “the quality is much different than what I’ve seen historically.”

He also highlighted that consumers’ increasing reliance on convenience is benefiting Walmart. According to Rennie, a third of their customers pay extra for fast food delivery through Walmart’s delivery services.

Meanwhile, Kroger operates 2,750 retail grocery stores under a variety of names, including Kroger, Ralphs, Dillons, Smith’s, King Soopers and Fred Meyer.

In the United States, Walmart operates just over 4,600 stores. And that doesn’t include its membership warehouse, Sam’s Club, which has about 600 locations across the country.
