US Olympic runner Fred Curley was arrested in South Florida after a standoff with police, authorities said.
Body camera footage released by Miami Beach Police shows Curley arguing with a group of officers late Thursday before the physical confrontation broke out. Curley was thrown to the ground, where an officer struck him several times and then used a stun gun on the 29-year-old jogger, police said.
According to the arrest report, officers were investigating an unrelated active police location when Curley approached the area and attempted to break into his vehicle, which was parked nearby. The officers asked Curley to walk around the area, but Curley began arguing with them, leading to a shoving match with police.
Four officers attempted to detain Curley as he moved to avoid arrest, officials said. After being tasered, Curley was transported to a local hospital and then to the Miami-Dade County Jail.
Curley is charged with battery, resisting an officer and disorderly conduct. Online court records did not immediately list an attorney for Curley, and USA Track & Field, the national governing body for track and field in the United States, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
Curley won a silver medal for the 100 meters at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and a bronze for the same event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. He also won six medals at the World Athletics Championships.
