The Unreal Engine, which in its various incarnations has been known as the premier — and perhaps even de facto — game engine for more than a decade, is quite familiar to mainstream game developers, especially those with AAA experience. This may be difficult to explain to the world of animated TV shows, although it probably won’t last long.
The engine is being used in the CG superhero show Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir in its sixth season, giving a visual boost to the series as it blurs the line between video games and CG animation. The teenage superheroes are animated using Unreal Engine’s 3D creation tools, which have been famously used in Epic’s Fortnite videos and trailers.
There have been previous uses of the Unreal Engine in television animation, and in that sense, the use in Miraculous is part of an ongoing trend, not a revolution, but an ongoing trend that is becoming more and more noticeable.
This expansion into CG animation represents a huge opportunity for Epic to license the Unreal Engine for a wider variety of projects than just video games. It could also theoretically resonate back into game development with more expanded features as Epic expands the toolset to better work with non-gaming projects.
Regardless, we may be looking at a change in the CG animation industry as it builds a bridge to game development and there is less light between the two concepts. This could be a good thing for Epic and could lift all boats in the process.
