UnitedHealth Group UnitedHealthcare on Thursday announced the new leader of its insurance division, UnitedHealthcare, following the alleged targeted killing last month of former CEO Brian Thompson.
Tim Noel, who most recently served as CEO of UnitedHealth Group’s Medicare and Retirement business, will take over the top job at UnitedHealthcare following Thompson’s killing. Noel has been with the company since 2007.
Noel “brings unparalleled experience to this role with a proven track record and a strong commitment to improving how health care works for consumers, physicians, employers, governments and our other partners,” UnitedHealth Group said in a statement.

Thompson was shot and killed on December 4 in Manhattan, where he was about to attend the company’s investor day. Law enforcement officials described the killing as a “deliberate and targeted attack.”

Thompson has been with the company for more than 20 years and previously served as CFO for several of the company’s businesses, including its Employer, Individuals, Community, State, Medicare and Retirement divisions before becoming CEO of UnitedHealthcare.

Luigi Mangione was arrested and Accused of murder In the murder, he also faces stalking, weapons and false ID charges. Mangione faces federal charges in addition to charges in New York and Pennsylvania, where he was arrested after a chase.

Last week, UnitedHealth Group announced its latest earnings report, in which CEO Andrew Witty thanked the public for its “overwhelming expressions of condolence and support” following Thompson’s killing.
“Many of you knew Brian personally,” Whitty said. “You knew how much he meant to all of us, and how he devoted his time to helping make the health system work better for all the people who were fortunate to serve him.” Thompson “will dive passionately and carefully into finding solutions to improve experiences, whether for the individual consumer, employer or public health agency.”
