After his meeting with Syrian President Ahmed Al -Shara, Ukrainian President Folodimir Zellinski said that Ukraine and Syria have regained official diplomatic relations as their leaders met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Ukrainian leader said that the two sides agreed to build “our relations on the basis of mutual respect and confidence.”

Al -Sharra arrived in New York on Sunday with a delegation of ministers to join the annual United Nations General Assembly, which represents Syria’s first participation in the event at the presidential level for nearly 60 years.

Damascus interrupted the gathering after the Arab -Israeli war in 1967, when Israel occupied the Golan Heights in southwestern Syria.

President Nordin Al -Atasi was the last Syrian president to attend the United Nations Summit, where he held his position from 1966 to 1970.

In January, Al -Sharra took power in Damascus after he led the opposition forces toppled by the regime of President al -Assad, which put an end to the rule of the Assad family for five decades on Syria.

In his first speech at UNGA earlier on Wednesday, Al -Shara called for the lifting of international sanctions on his war -torn nation.

Al -Sharra highlighted the reform measures that have been presented in the months since the assumption of power, including the establishment of new institutions, plans for elections and efforts to attract foreign investment.
