GMP had a troubled modern history. In 2019, a general investigation concluded that the deadly shooting of power seven years before Anthony Greenger, an unarmed professional criminal, was based on a defective intelligence exaggerating the threat it poses.

The general investigation of the 2017 Manchester Arena, in which Salman Abedi killed 22 people, criticized the 140 -minute waiting force to announce a major incident – described “serious omission” that hindered the ability of other services to respond.

In 2020, GMP was placed in special measures by police inspectors after failing to report one in five crimes over a long period. It was taken from special measures in 2022.
