Two Supreme Court judges were shot dead in Tehran

Two prominent Iranian judges were shot dead in an apparent assassination in Iran The highest court in the country.

Ali Rezini and Muhammad Moqissa were killed after a gunman entered the court in the capital, Tehran, on Saturday morning.

The attacker killed himself while fleeing the scene, according to the judiciary’s Mizan news website. A bodyguard was also injured in the attack.

The motive for the attack is unclear, but both judges are said to have played a role in the crackdown on opponents of the Islamist government since the 1980s.

In a statement, the Judicial Media Office described the attack as a premeditated assassination.

She also said that according to preliminary findings, the attacker was not involved in any case heard by the Supreme Court. Officials are investigating whether anyone else was involved in the attack.

Both victims had been in the judiciary for decades. On the Supreme Court, their responsibilities included confirming death sentences.

Razini, 71, was one of Iran’s most senior judges and survived an assassination attempt in 1998.

The European Union, the United States and Canada imposed sanctions on Moqissa (68 years old) due to alleged human rights violations.
