Ukraine says it has revealed a spy network run by the Hungarian state to obtain intelligence information about its defenses near its common borders.
Ukraine’s security service said it had detained alleged gymnasiums accused of collecting intelligence.
“For the first time in the history of Ukraine, the security ceremony revealed a galaxy military intelligence network that was running spy activities at the expense of our state,” SBU said.
Hungary is a member of the European Union and NATO – both of whom are allies in Ukraine – but President Victor Urban has repeatedly stood up to Russia since its invasion of Ukraine. The Hungarian government did not respond to the claims.
The alleged spy network was created by Hungary’s Military Intelligence with the aim of collecting data on a site and number SBU said that air defense systems, as well as law enforcement officers and their vehicles, in the western Zakarbatia region.
Zakarpattia is the western region of Ukraine, which shares 84 miles (137 km) with Hungary.
Spies were also collecting information about the general feelings between the local population to predict their response in the event of a Hungarian incursion, according to the central treatment course.
SBU did not give any indication that the alleged plot was helping in Russia.
The woman and the detained man – referred to by SBU as “traitors” – They were former members of the Ukrainian army and claimed that they were supervised by a Hungarian intelligence officer.
SBU said that the aforementioned suspect had crossed the border to Hungary to submit a report to his console, receive money and a calling device in return. SBU did not explain how to discover the alleged network.
The alleged spies were held in their homes.
Detainees are suspected of treason and face life imprisonment.
Relations between Hungary and Ukraine have been strained since Russia’s invasion of Russia has begun more than three years ago.
Urban tried to prevent the European Union aid To Ukraine, the sanctions opposed to Russian oil and gas, and expressed its opposition to Ukraine joining the European Union.
Hungary has been a member of NATO, the Atlantic Defense Alliance, since 1999. But since Urban climbed to power as an authoritarian leader, its policies have often been in dispute with Western positions.
The Urban government is among the few in Europe that has Preserving close relations with Russia After the invasion.
In isolation, these arrests and the alleged spy network involve a relatively simple event.
The short border of Ukraine with Hungary is far from the front lines, and this has no effect on the continuous fighting in the southeast and northeast of the country, where Russia controls about 20 % of Ukrainian lands.
But Russia, which uses missiles and drones to target all parts of Ukraine at intermittent periods, will be keen to know the locations of any military assets.
The former Minister of Defense in the United Kingdom told Sir Ben Wallace the BBC Radio 4 program today that this was not the first time that Ukraine was accused of Hungary of sabotage activity on its soil.
But he added that the sensitive military nature of the alleged targets this time made it more serious.
Wallace raised the issue of who will be the final recipient of this intelligence that was collected from within the borders of Ukraine.
“What Putin is most afraid is the values of NATO,” he said. “If these values are threatened or undermined, there must be some serious discussion within NATO about the members who act in this way.”
The SBU’s announcement also comes on the same day as Robert Fico, Prime Minister of another nation in NATO, Slovakia, in Moscow attended the Vladimir Putin’s offer to celebrate the defeat of the Soviet Union of Nazi Germany in World War II.
Since the rest of the NATO is striving to preserve the unity in the face of Russia’s continuous invasion, this last news will not be welcome.
About 150,000 Hungarians live in the Zakarbatia region of Ukraine, according to the last official census, in 2001.
Ukraine and Hungary have clashed in the past due to the rights of this society to use their original language and Urban’s efforts to enhance the Hungarian identity there.
Wallace said that when the Minister of Defense was, another conspiracy was discovered by Ukraine, as “the Hungarians were distributing passports to the ethnic Hungarians in the pocket of the earth,” which prompted Kiev to expel a number of diplomats.
