A 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippines, the Philippines’ seismological agency said, with a tsunami warning issued and people in nearby coastal areas urged to evacuate to higher ground.
The powerful earthquake occurred on Friday in the waters off Manai town in Davao Oriental in the Mindanao region at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles).
Waves are expected to be more than a meter above normal tides, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said in a tsunami warning.
The institute said tsunami waves could be higher along closed bays and straits.
The institute strongly advised people living in several areas to evacuate immediately to higher ground and inland.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
