President Donald Trump announced social media that conservative activist Charlie Kerk had died after he was shot at an event at the University of Utah Valley.
The president wrote in fact: “Charlie Kerk, the great, and even legendary, died.” “No one understood or had the heart of young people in the United States of America better than Charlie.”
Kirk, one of Trump’s supporters, founder of Turning Point Usa, was a group seeking to spread conservative ideas on students on the campus.
Officials say he just started speaking when one shot rang. The BBC videos are shown as he wanders back on his chair while students spread in panic.
A Utah Valley University spokeswoman, Eileen Trinor, said that the shooting came from the Lucy Center, a building about 200 yards.
Another spokesman, Scott Trotter, told the BBC: “One shot rang in a quarter near the dining hall on the campus of Utah Valley Orim, where Mr. Charlie Kerk began speaking in his plan.”
“We can confirm that Mr. Kirk has been shot, but we do not know his condition,” he said.
BBC Verify confirmed the authenticity of many video clips published online.
One of the videos shows crowded students about a white tent fortified with words, “American return” and “proving me a mistake.”
Charlie Kirk can be seen sitting alone under the tent with many others standing close.
In another video verified by the BBC, Mr. Kirk was seen speaking in the gathering for about four seconds, before hearing one shot.
Then it appears that he shook back on his chair, before the camera comes out and the crowd begins to run in a state of panic.
According to CBS, the American BBC partner, Mr. Kerk heard discussing weapons in the United States at moments before he was shot.
“Do you know the number of collective archers who have been in America over the past ten years?” One audience member asks him.
“Counting or not calculating gang violence”, it responds, before the shot comes out.
With the outbreak of news, politicians from all over the political spectrum, as well as right -wing influencers, condemned the attack.
“FBI and ATF are agents on the road. We pray for Charlie,” wrote Public Prosecutor Pam Bondi, the highest law enforcement official in the United States.
“We love you Charlie Kirk. We pray for you.”
California ruler Gavin New Zoom, a democratic and one of Trump’s leading competitors, described the attack as “disgusting, Dennis, and deserves to be denounced.
“In the United States of America, we must reject political violence in all forms.”
A former Utah state described the attack on Fox News how “everyone hit the surface” and “scattered” after hearing his shot.
“The bullet came immediately,” Jason Shafitz said, adding that he spoke to Kirk before the event started.
At the White House, the reaction of many press office employees was the reaction of Trump with a clear shock.
One of the assistants shouted, “Oh my God, Charlie Kirk was shot!” – The drawing is panting from colleagues.
