US President Donald Trump said he would meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska.
Trump announced the meeting in a post on social media and said more details will be followed.
This announcement came after Trump said on Friday that he would meet “very soon” with Putin to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, a leading leading landmark after expressing weeks of frustration that more had not been done to put out the fighting.
Speaking to the White House journalists earlier in the day, he also suggested that his meeting with the Russian leader may come before any discussion in sitting about Ukrainian President Voludmir Zelinsky.
“We will hold a meeting with Russia, we start with Russia,” Trump said.
If this happens, the meeting will be the first US summit of Russia since 2021, when former President Joe Biden met in Geneva. This may mean a boom in Trump’s efforts to end the war, although there is no guarantee that it will stop the fighting because Moscow and Kiev are still far from the conditions of peace.
There was no immediate confirmation from Moscow.
Trump also said that the peace agreement may likely mean “there will be some land exchange” between Ukraine and Russia, but it has not provided more details.
Analysts, including some closeness to the Kremlin, suggested that Russia could offer to abandon the lands it controls outside the four regions that it claims to have.
Trump nearly two weeks ago raised his warning to impose additional sanctions on Russia and introduce a secondary tariff targeting countries that buy Russian oil if the Kremlin did not move towards a settlement. The deadline was on Friday.
