Trump is “ready” for Russia’s punishment if NATO countries stop buying oil

US President Donald Trump said he is ready to impose strict sanctions on Russia, but only if NATO countries meet certain conditions that include stopping the purchase of Russian oil.

In a post on the social truth platform, he said he was “ready to hold major sanctions on Russia” as soon as NATO agrees, “and began to do the same.”

Trump has repeatedly threatened more strict measures against Moscow, but he has so far failed to take any action when the Kremlin ignored the deadlines and his threats to penalties.

He described Russian oil purchases as a “shock” and also indicated that NATO puts a tariff from 50 to 100 % on China, claiming that it would weaken its “strong control” on Russia.

In what he called a message to NATO countries, Trump said, “I am ready” to go “when you are. Just say when?”

Trump also claimed to stop the purchases of Russian energy, as well as the severe definitions of China “to be completely withdrawn” after the war, will be “great help” in ending the conflict.

Europe’s dependence on Russian energy has decreased significantly since the beginning of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

In 2022, the European Union obtained about 45 % of its gas from Russia. It is expected to drop to about 13 % this year, although Trump’s words indicate that he feels that the number is not enough.
