President Donald Trump and his Brazilian counterpart, Louise Insio Lula da Silva, received a call that both sides have described as friendly and positive as Brazil seeks to reduce the US tariff by 50 % on imports.
In the video chat on Monday, Lula asked Trump to remove most of the duties. Trump on social media said they had a “very good phone call.”
This is the first time that the two have spoken officially because they faced a brief meeting at the United Nations General Assembly in New York last month.
Since Trump, relations have raised the definitions this summer to 50 % on some Brazilian goods in response to the trial of a predecessor Lula, Gear Bolsonaro.
Lula Trump was accused of foreign interference and behavior such as an “emperor”.
But on Monday, the Brazilian government said that the two leaders spoke in a “friendly tone” for half an hour and “remembered good chemistry” in New York.
Lula described the meeting as an opportunity to “restore” friendly relations between the “largest Western Democrats” and reiterated that the United States has a trade surplus with Brazil.
He asked to reduce the customs tariff to the original 10 %, and to remove sanctions on some Brazilian officials.
The two are exchanged phone numbers to stay in direct contact.
Trump said on the social truth platform: “(The call) often focused on the economy and trade between the two countries.
“We will hold more discussions, and we will meet in the non -far -long future, whether in Brazil or the United States.”
Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alkain described the call as “better than expected”, and said he was optimistic about the talks between the two countries.
Lola called for Trump to the United Nations Climate Summit next month in Bilim, Brazil, she proposed a meeting during the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, and offered to travel to the United States.
Foreign Minister Marco Rubio appointed to continue negotiations with Vice President of Brazil, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Finance.
A source inside the Brazilian government, near Lula Lula Li BBC, said that Rubio was appointed at a time when the main negotiator in the tariff case is still reviewed by the team led by Vice President Alkain.
The source indicated that the Brazilian government did not ignore the fact that Rubio is part of the so -called “ideological wing” of the Trump administration.
On the other hand, the source added that for the government, it was better that there was a direct negotiator linked to the president and has his support, instead of a person without direct contact with Trump.
Another source, also involved in negotiations and speaking to BBC Brasil, provided that his identity was not disclosed, was more directly: they said that the government had not been to prefer different axes over Rubio.
