‘The Big Money Show’ panelists weigh in on the Teamsters’ latest move to pump money into the Republican Party.
President of the Truck Drivers Union Sean O’Brien Trump testified before a Senate committee on Wednesday and expressed his appreciation for Republican lawmakers’ efforts to reach out to labor unions and work with them on the legislation.
O’Brien testified before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee at the invitation of Chairman Bill Cassidy, R-Los Angeles, to discuss proposals for… Reform labor laws.
“I’m encouraged by the Republican majority being invited here as a guest, and that’s a positive change,” O’Brien said.
“For as long as I have been on the task force, neither party has led an effort to reach a bipartisan agreement on labor reform,” he explained. “Democrats have played political football with massive labor reform bills. Republicans have largely reintroduced business-friendly bills that make it harder to form a union.”

He added, “I don’t like to waste time. I was elected to get things done for my staff members, to find additional solutions and not dwell on problems or the past. Everyone in this room was similarly elected to produce for their constituents.”
O’Brien said this was his third time testifying before the Senate HELP Committee, and that the committee’s Democratic and Republican leaders had been unsuccessful in providing solutions to what he called “our country’s weak and unenforceable labor laws.”
“When I took office, I directed the truckers union’s legislative leadership to confront their partisan bias,” O’Brien said, referring to the Republican senator. “As a result, our union has found new allies on both sides of the aisle.” Josh HawleyR-Mo., as a leader in those efforts.

O’Brien said there is a “reorganization around the labor that’s happening inside.” Republican Party. The Truck Drivers Union wants to encourage this by offering multiple pathways to support our members, not a single legislative test.
As an example of this realignment and new bipartisanship on labor issues, O’Brien pointed to a bill Hawley introduced with the bipartisan senator in March. Cory BookerD.J.; Jeff Merkley, D-Ore. Bernie Moreno, Republican from Ohio; and Gary Peters, Democrat from Michigan. Four additional Democratic senators have since signed on as cosponsors.
The Faster Employment Contracts Act will be amended National Labor Relations Act To require employers to begin negotiating with the newly formed union within 10 days of a labor union vote.
It will also refer the parties to binding arbitration if mediation fails within 30 days or additional periods agreed upon between the union and the employer, and send disputes to mediation if an agreement is not reached within 90 days.
Trump keeps his word, delivers big win for automakers, union leader says
“After workers vote to form their union, many employers delay negotiations on the initial collective bargaining agreement. Nearly half of new unions fail to obtain a contract within a year of winning the election. After two years, a third of unions are without a contract,” O’Brien explained. “This bill ensures that the first contract can be reached within months, not years.”
Sin. Rand PaulThe Kentucky Republican spoke out about concerns raised by another expert witness at the hearing that a faster employment contract law would introduce bureaucracy into negotiations between employers and the newly formed union.

The complexity of collective bargaining agreements means workers who form a union and the employer need adequate time to consider their implications for the future of the company and its workforce, said Rachel Gresler, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation.
“When you have your first contract, especially if you have a company that has never been involved in negotiations or a union, and this is their first time representing workers, they need to understand all the issues,” she explained.

She also said contracts like General Union of Auto Workers Agreements with automakers like Ford can run thousands of pages when accounting for agreement memorandums, with several hundred items covered under the bargaining agreement.
“These are too many things for both workers and employers to take into account within a 120-day time frame,” Greisler added.
