About 40 percent of flights were canceled on Friday at all Paris airports Tens of thousands of passengers rearranged plans at the height of the summer travel season due to a strike of French air traffic controllers looking for better working conditions.

The disturbances began to hit airports around France on Thursday and intensify on Friday. The National Civil Aviation Authority asked airlines to cancel 40 percent of flights on Friday in Charles de Gaulle, Orly and Biovis airports that serve Paris, and half flights in Nice and 30 percent of flights in Marseille, Lyon and some other cities.

Despite the preventive cancellation, the authority warned in a statement that “the long turmoil and delay are expected at all French airports.”

Ryanair was among the airlines that announced widespread disturbances, saying in a statement that it had canceled more than 400 flights affecting 70,000 passengers. The company said that the strike affects all its flights on the French airspace, as well as traffic inside and outside the French airports, and urged the European Union to repair air traffic rules.

UNSA-NINA, one of the unions that lead the strike, said in a statement, there is not enough employees to deal with the high air travel and that inflation takes salaries. The unions also protest new reform measures aimed at tightly monitoring their business, motivated by eliminating Bordeaux Airport.

Transport Minister Philip Tabarut described the union’s demands – and their decision was beaten, and French schools are closed in summer and many families on leave – “unacceptable.”
