As an extension of its partnership with Telegram Messenger, TON will become the exclusive blockchain infrastructure that powers the Telegram widget ecosystem and supports Telegram’s global user base of over 950 million monthly active users.
Since the Foundation and Telegram announced their joint initiative in 2023, the TON ecosystem has seen unprecedented growth and widespread adoption. Since then, TON has been working on Telegram updates to its widget platform and using Toncoin for payments and disbursements. The Telegram advertising platform played an important role in the growth of the TON network. The new exclusivity agreement deepens the technology ties between TON and Telegram.
Unify the user experience on-chain through TON Connect
Central to this collaboration is the adoption of TON’s proprietary wallet connection protocol, TON Connect, as the exclusive protocol for connecting Telegram mini apps to blockchain wallets.
This initiative provides a streamlined user experience as all Web3 mini apps in Telegram will use TON to connect and authorize blockchain transactions. All widgets that use blockchain in any capacity, including custodial and non-custodial wallets, user authorization, on-chain signatures, and sending and receiving blockchain-based assets, must implement TON Connect as the wallet’s exclusive communication protocol in the following month.
TON blockchain and Toncoin have become exclusive to Telegram
Furthermore, Telegram will continue to accept Toncoin as the only cryptocurrency for paperless payments made for assets and services offered on its platform, including Telegram Stars, Telegram Premium, Telegram Ads, and Telegram Gateway, an alternative platform to traditional SMS verification. Additionally, Toncoin will be the only currency used to pay Telegram Mini app developers and channel owners for earned Telegram stars and advertising revenue.
Tokenization of digital assets from the Telegram platform
Telegram plans to tokenize digital assets exclusively on the TON Blockchain within the platform, including emojis and stickers, among other digital assets, while also tokenizing limited edition gifts such as NFTs.
