At least three people have died in floods due to heavy rains and storms that have been beaten in southern France since Monday.
Local authorities said on Tuesday that the bodies of an elderly couple in the town of Beach Resort, while another person died after being trapped in a car in Vidoban, according to the local authorities on Tuesday.
The rain caused widespread damage throughout the region, the streets are flooded and caused electrical and water outage. At least two regional drops stopped their flights overnight after the railway tracks were damaged.
The Prosecutor in Toulon said that the couple who died attempted to leave their home, but they were swept away, “they were surprised by a very rapid rise in water levels.”
An investigation was opened in their death.
“We are shocking from the size of the natural catastrophe that struck the Cavalier region this morning,” said officials in Le Lavando. They said that the city center was flooded with rain 256 mm in only one hour.
The city, about 30 km (18 miles) east of St. Trops, is a destination for holidays along the French Riviera.
“It was a truly violent, bad, incomprehensible phenomenon,” said local mayor Jill Bernardi.
Le Lavando was still suffering from power and water outages on Tuesday, and arrival was restricted with the main road in the city.
Meanwhile, officials in the north in Vidoban said that one person died after they carried the car to the road that was flooded and fell into a trench.
A passerby tried to save both passengers – the driver and the passenger – but he was not only able to save the driver, Claude said.
The authorities said that more than 500 emergency services were made in the Far area during the past day. Several hundreds of rescue men were also deployed in emergency situations in the region, including from nearby cities such as Cannes.
VAR was placed on other emergency warnings of thunderstorms and floods on Tuesday morning, but was later reduced to the lowest level.
Local authorities said earlier that more than 600 homes were still without electricity.
The heavy rains and prominent storms were struck southwest of France on Monday evening. The Bordeu-Tulus railway line was affected by some trains on the road that was canceled during the next few days.
