As companies in India continue to move in post -work policies from home, conflicts over the office’s attendance have become more common. A SBC employee recently shared his struggle with the administration about the number of times he should come to the office, which sparked an online discussion.
The employee, who lives about 300 km from the Bangalore office, said that his ministry has an unlimited WFH policy during the past year. However, he only went once every two months to attend the main meetings or driving sessions.
“I am working in SBC, and our department had an indefinite WFH policy over the past year. The office is in Bangalore, and employees who live in a place near time to time, maybe once from time to time or to attend specific meetings. I live in a different city, about 300 km away.
Moreover, he said that his manager insisted that he should come to the office once a week for team building exercises and cultural activities. The employee wrote: “I have explained several times that it is not possible for me to travel often, but it is not retreating. He has begun to create tension between us, and our relationship is getting worse day by day.”
He added: “I am now thinking about escalating this to senior management. But I am worried, can this affect my relationship with the team?”
Soon the viral post went between the red, and attracted many reactions and advice.
One of the users weighed, saying: “This might affect your relationship with the team, yes. You must escalate if you don’t want to get closer.
Redditor joined the last generational perspective, writes, “I think it is a problem in the generation. When Gen Z becomes managers, these problems will not be present.”
Redditors also pointed out that such conflicts are not unique in this company, which reflects a broader struggle as companies adapt to work standards after birth and try to maintain the cohesion of the team while respecting the work arrangements.
