This isn’t your typical car’s HUD: Check out Hyundai Mobis’ holographic head-up display

CNET’s Bridget Carey takes a look at Hyundai Mobis’ new holographic display window at CES 2025

One of the biggest problems with having a bunch of screens in your car is that they distract you when you’re trying to drive. Well, I’m trying out a concept car from Hyundai Mobis that puts everything on the windshield in a new kind of technology. This is not a typical HUD. It uses displays to show me information, and the passenger can’t see these things, and I can’t see what the passenger sees. And here at CES, this little demo. You kind of showed me how to see MPH hovering here in front of me. If I moved my head, it was gone. It’s kind of like a weird little magic effect because what it does is project the image onto a special film here and what makes it unique compared to other things is that it controls the light in different ways. For example, if you’re driving toward the sun and it’s really bright, you won’t be affected. I can’t test that here, but that’s how they explain it. Technology for me. Well, now I see, you know how fast I’m traveling, what the speed limit is. I get my bearings there and I can kind of tell you what music I’m listening to. If I wanted to, I could put more. I can set the weather, but if I’m changing lanes, then it starts giving me other mirrors. Oh, look, there I can see, oh, who’s coming to my left, what’s to my right, and I can get a different field of view from the cameras around the car if I want to navigate. You can also view services so you don’t take your eyes off the road if you want the mapping system to see you know where you’re going on your trip. It’s all just kind of layered on top of everything. I don’t really change my focus that much. I mean, in this example I’m seeing a TV screen, obviously I’m not really driving the car, but I’m looking ahead and moving my eyes down a little bit and not looking around the car or turning my car around violently. head. There’s a lot I can’t see where I’m going, so it has some interesting safety features here. I’m not a big fan of too many screens in a car. I think they are distracting. So this is a step in the good direction. What’s also interesting is that the passenger can’t see how fast I’m driving. Have you ever been a passenger and want to monitor what the driver is doing, you will not be able to understand that in this concept because there is nothing on the dashboard. It’s all about me. Little secret here. While I focus on the road, the passenger can do things like watch movies and play games. We saw an example where someone was playing the game through an app connection on their phone, so they could do whatever they wanted, and I’d never know. And with this SOIS concept, they have other ways in which they can take the technology to another level. Let’s say I’m feeling a little nervous or maybe someone is feeling sleepy on the road. Well, they have other types of technology that they can connect to your brain waves and say, hey, maybe if I’m feeling a little stressed or a little sleepy, this screen might tell me something to help me wake up or they could do that so I can set the lights or the vibration and the heat in my seat or the music to help me To be more focused or less stressed on the road. Another thing you may not be able to tell from just watching at home is that this. The screen it is viewed on is up to 95% transparent. You know, I don’t have to carry it all the way, you know, but I can still see all the way through it. I’m now looking through the road. I see the crosswalk. I see dotted lines. It’s not like a computer screen that takes over everything. I know it’s just a concept, but as someone who doesn’t buy cars with screens, you know what? I can dig this. Let me know what you think.
