The US President says that Ukraine should be able to defend itself and it is “severely damaged.”
US President Donald Trump said his administration will send more weapons to Ukraine after a previous decision to stop some arms shipments that led to a condemnation from Kiev and its supporters.
Speaking to journalists before dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington, DC on Monday, Trump said that the new shipments will consist in the first place of “defensive weapons”.
“We will send more weapons. We have to be able to defend themselves,” Trump said.
“They have been beaten now.”
Pentagon’s chief spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed Trump’s comments later on Monday, saying that Washington will provide “additional defense weapons” “to ensure that Ukrainians can defend themselves while we are working to secure a permanent peace and ensure the cessation of murder.”
Barnil added that Trump will continue to evaluate military shipments abroad, according to the first defense priorities in America.
Trump’s pledge came after Russia announced on Monday that it had acquired the Ukrainian village of Duffroptrovsk, after paying for months to seize lands in the central region.
The decision also follows a Declaration issued by the Pentagon last week that it will stop the shipments of some weapons, including air defense missiles and micro -guided artillery, out of concern that the stocks were very low.
After a phone call to Trump on Friday, Ukrainian President Voludimir Zelinski said he agreed with his American counterpart to work to strengthen air defenses in Ukraine.
“We talked about the opportunities in air defense and we agreed that we will work together to enhance our sky protection,” Zelinski said in a post on X.
On Friday, Trump described the invitation as “very good” and said that his administration was “looking” in selling more Patriot missiles to Kiev.
“They need them to defend. I don’t want to see people kill,” Trump told reporters in the Air Force.
