The United Nations condemns the targeted Israeli attack that killed five Jazeera journalists

The United Nations Human Rights Office condemned a targeted Israeli attack that killed six journalists in Gaza, describing it as a “serious violation” of international humanitarian law.

Five of the island’s journalists, including prominent correspondent Nas al -Sharif, were killed in an Israeli air strike on Sunday evening, along with a sixth independent journalist.

The Israeli army said it had targeted Sharif, claiming that he was “served as head of a terrorist cell in Hamas.”

The media rights groups and countries, including Qatar, have condemned the attack. A spokesman for Prime Minister Sir Kerr Starmer said that the UK government “was very anxious” and called for an independent investigation.

Speaking to reporters, the spokesperson for Starmer said that Israel should ensure that journalists can work safely and report without fear.

The funerals of Sharif, his colleague, Al -Jazeera correspondent Mohamed Qreiqeh and photographer Ibrahim Zahr, Mohamed Noufal and Mamin Elia were held on Monday after the targeted missile strike on their tents in Gaza City.

Reuters news agency reported that Mohamed Al -Khalidi was named by the paramedics at the Shiva Hospital as a sixth journalist who was killed during the strike. Another person was also killed in the attack.

The owners of the correspondents without borders, a media freedom group, condemned the power of what he called the assassination of Sharif.

The Foreign Press Association said it is angry at the targeted killing. He said that the Israeli army has repeatedly described the Palestinian journalists “as armed, often without verifying evidence.”

The CPJ Protection Committee (CPJ) said it was horrific from the attack and Israel has failed to provide evidence to support its allegations against it.

The organization added: “Israel has a long, reliable and documented pattern of journalists accused of being terrorists without providing any reliable evidence.”

The Israeli army suggested that it had documents in Gaza, which confirmed Sharif belonging to Hamas.

“The lists of employees, lists of terrorist training courses, phone guides and salary documents,” she said.

The only substances that were released for publication are footage of the data schedules that appear to be the enthusiasm of Hamas agents from the northern Gaza Strip, with reference to injuries in Hamas workers and the department of what is said to be a telephone guide for the Eastern Group of Armed Group Battalion.

The United Nations Humanitarian Agency said on Friday that the amount of aid entering Gaza is still “much lower than the minimum required to meet the enormous needs of people.” Last month, universal international food security experts warned of “the worst famine scenario that is currently playing.”

Israel continued to deny hunger in Gaza and accused the United Nations agencies of not picking up and providing aid.

The United Nations Humanitarian Agency said it continues to see obstacles and delay because it is trying to collect aid from the Israeli -controlled border areas.

Israel launched its attack in response to the Hamas -led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, where about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken into account.

Since then, 61,430 people have been killed in Gaza as a result of the military campaign of Israel, according to the Ministry of Health.
