The unemployment rate at 5.1 % in April, youth reach 13.8 %: the first monthly monthly data

The center unveiled the monthly work forces and the opening unemployment on Thursday, indicating a move towards tracing employment in the actual time. According to the Ministry of Statistics and Implementation of the Program (MOSPI), the national unemployment rate (UR) reached 5.1 % in April 2025 for individuals between the ages of 15 years and over, with a slightly higher rate for men (5.2 %) compared to women (5.0 %).

This new monthly data, collected through the current weekly case scale (CWS), aims to survey the periodic workforce (PLFS), to provide faster and more detailed visions in the labor market in India. Previously, the workforce wipe was published only on a quarterly and annual basis.

Youth unemployment, aged 15-29, was recorded by 13.8 % at the country level. Urban areas reported the unemployment rate 17.2 %, while rural areas reached 12.3 %.

The unemployed was between those in the 15-29 age group 13.8 per cent across the country. The unemployment rate in urban areas reached 17.2 percent, while 12.3 percent was in rural areas.

CWS, which means the current weekly situation, is determined based on the activity level in the past seven days preceding the scanning date.

According to the study, the unemployment rate (UR) for women between the ages of 15 and 29 years was 14.4 % worldwide, at a rate of 23.7 % in urban areas and 10.7 % in rural areas.

For men in the same age group, the unemployment rate was 13.6 % in the country, at a rate of 15 % in cities and 13 % in villages.

In April, the LFPR participation rate in India reached 55.6 % in the country. Rural areas showed higher participation in the workforce, with LFPR 58.0 %, unlike 50.7 % in urban areas.

For men, LFPR remained strong in both the rural and urban environment, by 79.0 % and 75.3 %, respectively. However, women have faced a great contrast with lower LFPR. In the rural areas of India, females LFPR reached 38.2 %, highlighting the prevailing dependence on informal and unpaid work, especially in agricultural families.

The percentage of working population (WPR) was recorded, indicating the percentage of individuals working among the population of work age, by 52.8 % throughout the country. WPR was 55.4 % higher in rural areas compared to 47.4 % in urban areas.

The gender variations were clear in WPR characters as well. While rural women were 36.8 %, only 23.5 % of urban women between the ages of 15 and over were working at work. The total female WPR for India in April reached 32.5 %.
