The UK has secretly resettled thousands of Afghans after data leakage, the British government says

The British government revealed on Tuesday that thousands of Afghans, including many who worked with the British forces, were secretly resettled in the UK after data leakage about their identities.

The government is now planning to close the secret road.

Defense Secretary John Heili said that a group of data containing personal information that has 19,000 Afghan people who applied to Britain after the Taliban released Afghanistan by mistake in 2022, and later published excerpts online.

This prompted the governorate government at the time to establish a secret program to resettle Afghans. The government obtained an order from the court known as the superior situation that prevented anyone from revealing its existence.

On Tuesday, the Al -Zarja order was raised in conjunction with a decision by the current Labor Party government in Britain to make the program public. She said that an independent review found only a few evidence that the data that was leaked will endanger the Afghans of a greater risk of revenge on the Taliban.

“I was very anxious about the lack of transparency of parliament and the public,” Haley told the House of Commons.

About 4,500 people – 900 applicants and about 3,600 family members – were transferred to Britain under the secret program, and about 6900 people are expected to be transferred by the time it is closed, at a total cost of 850 million pounds (1.5 billion dollars).

About 36,000 Afghans have been transferred to the UK under other resettlement methods.

British forces were sent to Afghanistan as part of the deployment of forces against al -Qaeda and the Taliban in the wake of the attacks on September 11, 2001. At the height of the operation, there were nearly 10,000 British soldiers in the country, most of them in Helmand County in the south. Britain ended combat operations in 2014.
