The Trump administration ends Harvard’s ability to register international students

The Trump administration has moved to end Harvard’s ability to register international students, and to escalate a confrontation with the oldest university in America.

The Minister of Internal Security, Christie Nayyim, wrote on X that the administration canceled the “Student Program Certificate and the Harvard visitors program” as a result of her failure to adhere to the law.

“Let this serve as a warning to all universities and academic institutions throughout the country,” she wrote on Thursday.

Harvard called the “illegal” step in a statement.

“We are fully committed to maintaining Harvard’s ability to host our international students and scientists, who come from more than 140 countries and enrich the university – and this nation – unlimited,” the university answered.

“We are working quickly to provide guidance and support to our community members. This retaliatory procedure threatens to the Harvard community and our country, and undermines Harvard’s academic and research mission.”

Trump administration decisions can affect thousands of international students studying at the university. More than 6,700 international students were registered in the institution last year, and the university data constitute 27 % of the Student Authority.

“We see a lot of ambiguity about this,” Sarah Davis, an Australian student who obtained a graduate degree, told BBC NewShour.

She said: “The news happened just five days before many of us graduated from the university, and it is clear that this will have many unconfirmed effects about whether we were able to stay in the United States after that and continue to work here.”

“We are all only sitting and waiting to see if we are getting communications about the next steps from the university.”

In a message on Thursday, Nayywan said Harvard should comply with a list of demands to obtain an “opportunity” to restore her ability to register international students.

This included all the disciplinary records of non -immigrant students registered at Harvard University over the past five years. Harvard also demanded the delivery of electronic records, videos or sound for “illegal” and “dangerous or violent” activity by non -immigrant students on the campus.

Harvard’s notification gave 72 hours to comply with.

The Trump administration tried to reduce visas for international students, causing jamming the university campus throughout the United States and leading to a wave of lawsuits.

In some cases, these cancels seemed to affect foreign students who participated in political protests or have been concerned with previous criminal charges, such as leadership violations.

In a separate court case on Thursday, a California federal judge prevented the Trump administration from canceling the legal status of international students throughout the United States while the challenges of politics in the court.
