The terrifying moment when the Air India plane crashed into a canteen

On Thursday afternoon, it was at the residential youth house of the BJ Medical College and the canteen was filled with students who have lunch.

The room was immersed in the voice of jokes and joking between friends, and strange academic discussion.

By 13:39 local time, there were at least 35 people in cafeteria. Some already collected their food and were wandering, while others were on the waiting list waiting for their role.

Students are mixed with doctors and family members. Then everything changed.

The bombing general home was hacked by the sound of approaching jet engines – then the room exploded.

Less than a minute ago, the AI171 flight from the runway at Ahmedabad Airport, 1.5 km (4800 feet).

Air India 787 Dreamliner was heading to London, which was carrying 242 people.

But there is something wrong, and after her wheels left the ground, the plane was in trouble. Mayday’s call was sent before collapsing to a crowded residential area – in addition to the doctors’ hostel – by sending a huge motor ball to the sky and killing everyone except for one person.

The British Broadcasting Corporation spoke to eyewitnesses, including the students who were in the youth house, along with the friends of the trained doctors who died and their teachers, to collect what happened in those few terrifying seconds – and beyond.

People on the ground were unable to know what happened immediately.

A doctor, who works with the college’s kidney science department, says that he and his colleagues were in their building, about 500 meters away, when they heard a “designed voice” outside.

“At first, we thought it was lightning. But then we asked, could this be possible at a dry heat of 40 ° C?”

Doctors ran abroad.

And that is when they heard a few people screaming: “Look, come here, a plane crashed in our building.”

The next few minutes were blurry. The scenes of the chaos came down on the campus while people were running in an attempt to escape – or know what happened.

The prince and Crischi brothers were on their bicycles just a few meters from the youth house when they heard noise.

“Within secondly, we can see something like a plane wing,” the 18 -year -old prince told the BBC.

“We rushed to the scene, but the heat from the explosion was severe and we could not enter the youth house. There was a lot of debris.”

The brothers, along with a few other volunteers from the local area, have waited to calm the heat before trying to enter the building physically. They worked with the police to transport some debris from the entrance.

When they finally arrived at the canteen, they could not see anyone.

Dark and dense clouds of smoke were flooded. The air smell of the burning metal. Krish, 20, explained that the brothers, who were heading just minutes ago, were heading to play the cricket game, in removing cooking gas cylinders to avoid any other explosions, Krish, 20 years old.

The other brothers and volunteers discovered a pile of bags and went to transport them. You did not reveal after that, they said, it was intestine.

Behind them, they started making people’s forms.

Most of them were alive. Some had spoons filled with food in their hands, some of them had food panels in front of them, and some had glasses in their hands.

They were all seriously injured.

They were also silent, in shock. Just minutes before their usual appearance. Now, they were surrounded by metal pieces of aircraft.

“They did not get a chance to respond,” said another doctor, who was in a nearby building.

A student in the second year, who lived in the youth house, was among those who managed to escape.

He was sitting in his usual place – a large table in the angle of chaos, next to one of the walls – with nine others when the plane crashed.

“There was a huge sensation and a shocking screaming voice. The next thing we knew, we were under huge rocks, stuck without going anywhere,” he says. “The fire and the smoke of the plane that crashed close to our face and it was difficult to breathe.”

He got severe chest wounds in the accident and are still being treated in a local hospital. He does not know what happened to his friends.

Many eyewitnesses told the BBC that the huge wing of the plane was first penetrated through the ceiling, followed by parts of the fuselage. It was the most severe damage as the suite fell.

In chaos, students started jumping from the second and third floors of escape. Tell the students later how one of the only stairs was banned outside the debris.

The number of people killed on the ground is not known.

Dr. Minakshi Barrick, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at BJ and the Civil Hospital, told the BBC that four of their students have died, in addition to four relatives of students.

But exactly the number of those killed may take days to establish it: Investigators need to rely on the DNA to determine the bodies in the debris officially.

It was not the people at that moment who were killed.

Just a few kilometers away, Ravi Thakur, who worked in the Youth House kitchen. He had gone out to present lunch boxes in other homes throughout the city. His two -year -old wife and daughter remained as usual.

When he heard the news, he rushed back but found complete chaos. It has been about 45 minutes and the place was full of local population, firefighters, ambulances and Air India employees.

He tried to search for his wife and child, but he could not find them.

Returning to the main hospital bloc, teachers are still trying to understand chaos.

“I used to teach these students and knew them personally. The injured students are still treating the hospital, and they are our priority at the present time,” one of the professor at the college told the BBC.

Meanwhile, Ravi Thakur is still looking for his loved ones, even with his hopes.
