Barbie Reynolds, 76, and her husband Peter Reynolds, 80, arrived in Qatar on Friday after months of negotiations between Qatar, Taliban and Britain.

The couple, who were detained in February, was met by relatives, including their daughter, when they arrived in Doha, Qatar, on Friday.

She added that their families will be “forever grateful for Qatari and British governments to stand with us during this difficult time.”

“This experience reminded us of the power of diplomacy, sympathy and international cooperation,” she said.

The son of the couple, Jonathan Reynolds, Sky News from the United States that their health would have started to deteriorate if they were detained anymore, although Qatar is sure of access to the doctor and medicines during their families.

Their families accused the Taliban of mistreating the couple, and urged the government to explain the reason for their arrest.

The Taliban claimed that the spouses had broken Afghan laws without going into details.

“We are very grateful because at least, today is a very wonderful humanitarian day, and that they will be reunited with their families,” said Richard Lindsay, a British envoy to Afghanistan, adding that “it is clear that the (Afghanistan) authorities are here to determine the reason for their arrest.”

British Prime Minister Kiir Starmer He added, “I want to pay tribute to the vital role that Qatar plays, including the Emir, His Highness Sheikh Tarim bin Hamad Al Thani, in securing their freedom.”
