A man believed to be a Bangladeshi national was arrested in India’s financial capital Mumbai on Sunday and is considered the prime suspect in the stabbing of Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan, police said.
Thursday’s attack on Khan, one of India’s most bankable stars, shocked the country’s film industry and Mumbai residents, with many calling for better police and security. Doctors said he was out of danger.
“Preliminary evidence indicates that the accused is a Bangladeshi citizen, and after entering India illegally, he changed his name,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam said at a press conference.
Gedam said the suspect, who was arrested on the outskirts of Mumbai, was using the name Vijay Das but was believed to be Muhammad Sharif Islam Shehzad and was working with a housekeeping agency after coming to the city five or six months ago.
He added that the police would request the suspect’s detention for further investigation.
The star was stabbed in his home
Khan (54 years old) was stabbed six times by an intruder during an attempted robbery at his home. Doctors said that he entered the hospital with blood-stained clothes, accompanied by his six-year-old son Taimur, and then underwent surgery to treat wounds in his back, neck and hands.

Doctors said on Friday that Khan’s condition was stable and out of danger after surgery.
“If the knife had penetrated further, there would have been a spinal injury,” Neeraj Uttamnani, one of the doctors who treated Khan, told reporters last week, adding that the actor survived by just 2mm.
Police in Mumbai arrested the first main suspect in the attack on Friday, while police in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh arrested a second person on Saturday.
Khan is the son of former Indian cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and actress Sharmila Tagore, and is one half of one of Bollywood’s biggest power couples. He and his wife Kareena Kapoor Khan have starred in more than 60 films each, including a few that they have worked on together.

in Posted on Instagram Last week, Kapoor Khan called on the media and photographers to “refrain from constant speculation and coverage”, stating that the continued attention is overwhelming and poses a “huge risk to our safety”.
