DeBak Barric, the former HDFC chairman, reported two increasing concerns in the banking scene in India – stress in microfinance and unrestricted growth of the inappropriate lending – during an explicit Podcast conversation with former ICici Bank President Chanda Koshr.

“Microfinance worries me,” said Barrick, pointing to the corrosion of disturbing assets (ARS) and high -performance assets (NPAS). “If you see – 15 % to 18 % of NPA – you will not get a margin of this amount. The number is amazing as well. What you read was about 60,000 rupees in NPAS on a book book from 3 to 33 dollars.”

Parric, who led HDFC, decades of financial development, said these trends are not just statistical blades, but rather indicate the systematic stress. He expressed his concern for equal payment of aggressive payment by NBFCS and banks in unacolsted personal lending. “There is a small problem with unprecedented loans,” he warned, citing the increasing assumptions and risky subscription practices.

He stressed the importance of loan discipline at the retail level as well. “I think only 25 % of someone’s income should go towards loans’ payment,” Parik advised. “You need to balance for your family, maintenance, taxes.” He pointed out that the exception is for the high net individuals.

While acknowledged the hacking of retail credit in India, it is still low – the credit appeal is 40 % of GDP compared to 70 % in China and the United States – warning that meeting in the future will be difficult unless banks are able to finance this growth. “The demand for retail requires, but banks need money to do so,” said Barrick.

He also informed the low insurance penetration and poor home savings as the structural opposite winds. He said: “This is a source of concern that RBI will have to address,” and he calls for caution even as India’s financial aspirations continue to rise.
