“The same players are getting worse under the new coach.”

Ruben Amorim admitted he made a mistake in his anger after the 3-1 home defeat to Brighton, as he described his team as the “worst in Manchester United’s history”.

The Portuguese made the claim after his players produced another poor display on Sunday that left them languishing in 13th place in the Premier League table.

Amorim said he was talking more about himself than the team after failing to make a positive impact following his arrival from Sporting Lisbon.

Speaking before tomorrow’s Europa League match with Rangers, he said: “I was talking about myself more than my players because it is difficult to find a coach who lost seven matches in the first 10 matches. This is more important to me.”

“Every time they (the press) talk about players not being good enough, so I understand I gave you that title.

“I get frustrated sometimes and I shouldn’t say things in those terms but that’s how it is. Sometimes it’s really hard to hide the frustration. The good thing is I said the same things in the dressing room five minutes ago.

He added: “The response was natural because I am really honest with my players. They trained well and are ready for this match.

“I don’t take responsibility for the players. What I’m saying is that the message you guys showed is that I was putting it on the players. What I’m saying is, you have to look hard to find a Manchester United team that has lost seven of them in 10 games, and that’s on me.

“I’m young and sometimes I make a mistake. That’s why I don’t (usually) talk after the match. Same players, different coach

Erik Ten Hag left United languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table when he was sent off and Amorim has been unable to knock the Red Devils out of that position.

Despite positive wins over the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal, there were also worrying losses to Wolves and Brighton.

Amorim is aware of the situation and added: “They are the same players who behave worse with a new coach. This is my only concern at the moment. I don’t take responsibility for the players but we need to improve the details and I made that clear.

“The way we play makes us very nervous with the ball. It wasn’t the best point after that loss, but that’s how it is and I’m like that all the time. I’m really direct in dealing with things and I’d say at this moment our performance is really bad and our results are really bad.” .
