Here’s how things look on Thursday, October 9, 2025:
Fighting
- The governor of the Russian Belgorod region said that three people were killed and another was injured as a result of Ukrainian bombing.
- The Russian Ministry of Defense said that its forces took control of the Novohryhorivka settlement in the Ukrainian Zaporizhya region.
- Russian air defense units destroyed 53 Ukrainian drones overnight, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing data from the Russian Defense Ministry.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his evening speech that his country’s forces have killed thousands of Russian soldiers in the Dobrobillya region in eastern Ukraine since August 21, when they launched a counterattack on the Russian occupation forces. Zelensky said that this information is based on a report he received from the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Army, Oleksandr Sirsky.
- Zelensky also said that Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil facilities had deteriorated them to the point that the country was suffering from energy shortages. He claimed that Russia had to resort to its diesel reserves, which it had been saving for a “rainy day.”

Regional security
- Recent drone incidents and other airspace violations show that Europe faces a hybrid war to which it must respond with measures that go beyond conventional defences, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, speaking at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
- Von der Leyen said it was clear that Russia’s goal was to “sow division” and “weaken support for Ukraine,” and that Europe “would either be ashamed and watch Russian threats escalate, or confront them with unity, deterrence and resolve.” However, Russian President Vladimir Putin denied that Moscow was behind recent drone strikes in the airspace of a number of European countries.
Military aid
- Russia will respond harshly if the United States supplies Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles, Andrei Kartapolov, head of the Russian Parliament’s Defense Committee, said, stressing that “those who supply them and those who use them will face problems.”
Diplomacy
- Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that the momentum to find a Ukrainian peace agreement, which emerged after the summit between President Putin and US President Donald Trump in August, has been exhausted.
- Ryabkov urged the US leadership to take a “sober and responsible approach” to the possible transfer of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, saying such deals could lead to a “qualitative change” in the situation.
