The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNRWA) is “indispensable” and “indispensable” – not only in Gaza and the occupied West Bank but for the entire region.

This was the message that many senior diplomats affirmed on Thursday at the United Nations General Assembly, where they begged the agency’s political and financial support.

“UNRWA is a force to settle in the most unstable regions in the world,” said UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres at a meeting on the sidelines of the summit.

“UNRWA is vital to any prospects for peace and stability in the region. I urge you to do everything in your power to support its work.”

The role of the agency was under a microscope since the outbreak of the Israel war in Gaza in October 2023.

Since the bombing and ground invasion campaigns were displaced, UNRWA has become one of the main distributors of aid in the region.

But with the United States – once the largest donor in UNRWA – the financing is cut off, the United Nations is now facing a major financial crisis with a budget deficit of $ 200 million.

On Thursday, Jordanian Foreign Minister Iman Safadi warned that “UNRWA is collapsing.”

“I do not have to make up the UNRWA case. Children who are starving in Gaza are painfully making this situation,” Safadi said.

“Mothers who watch their children fade in front of their eyes raising the UNRWA case. 600,000 students in Gaza, who did not go to school for two years, make the UNRWA case.”

The United Nations Provides Health Care, Education, Humanitarian Aid and Monetary Assistance to millions of Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territories and through the Middle East.

The agency was established in 1949 to take care of the needs of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees, who were ethnically cleansed by their cities during the establishment of the State of Israel a year ago.

Since then, UNRWA has provided services to the displaced Palestinians and their offspring, who remain unitary.

For years, successive Israeli governments have prompted the removal of UNRWA, accused of distributing anti -Semitic materials and linking them to armed groups.

However, critics have argued that the efforts made to undermine UNRWA are designed to erase the plight of Palestinian refugees who seek to return to their homes in modern Israel.

In the wake of the Hamas -led attack against Israel on October 7, 2023, UNRWA increased pressure.

Israel falsely claimed that a large number of UNRWA employees participated in the attack, although no reliable evidence was provided.

This has led several countries to suspend the agency’s financing. While many aid that it later regained to UNRWA, the United States did not do so.

At a meeting on Thursday, which was aimed at mobilizing international support for UNOWA, Safadi explained that the agency was facing a “political assassination campaign” long before October 2023.

He also praised the sacrifices of UNRWA employees, who have been killed hundreds since the start of the Israel war on Gaza.

The Jordanian diplomat said: “However, UNRWA is continuing. He perseveres.”

“UNRWA employees, who bury their relatives, leave and try to provide assistance to the needy in Gaza. That is why we must provide. For this reason we say that UNRWA is indispensable. Its role cannot be compensated.”

For his part, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira criticized the batch to discredit UNRWA.

He said: “Legal restrictions on UNRWA operations and the closure of UNRWA offices and facilities in East Jerusalem are part of a disturbing pattern of obstruction and violence implemented by the Israeli government.”

“On the equality, attempts to remove legitimacy from UNRWA through the campaigns of misinformation, defamation, and legal harassment (and) initiatives aimed at replacing the agency with other humanitarian actors in Gaza with the mechanisms of distribution of military.”

In recent months, Israel has passed laws to prohibit the agency from the country and prohibit contact with it.

This in turn impeded the UNRWA operations in occupied East Jerusalem, which were included in Israel.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albaris announced that his country will save 10 million euros (11.66 million dollars) for the agency, and for the amount that Madrid has donated to UNIA since the beginning of the war to about 60 million euros (70 million dollars).

“The needs are enormous, and we need to stand next to the agency and provide the financial support that requires its work,” Albaris said.

He added that countries that do not like UNRWA should press to establish a Palestinian state that would take UNRWA tasks and take care of its people.

UNRWA President Philip Lazarini said that despite the deadly situation on the ground in Gaza, the agency is still working in the region.

“We still have 12,000 employees,” he said. “They are still on a daily basis and against all difficulties – providing health services, doing a food examination for children, ensuring access to clean water, and shelter management, (and) providing – whenever possible – some social psychological support for children.”
