Outgoing French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said on Wednesday that French President Emmanuel Macron may appoint a new prime minister within the next 48 hours, after recent talks between political parties to avoid early parliamentary elections.

Lecornu, who resigned as prime minister on Monday but was then tasked by Macron to hold talks with parties in the hung parliament, said the prospect of new elections was declining and a consensus was emerging to try to agree on a 2026 budget.

“I feel the path is possible,” Lecornu told France 2 television, adding that it was still difficult. He added: “I informed the President of the Republic that the chances of dissolving (Parliament) are declining, and I believe that the situation allows the President to appoint a prime minister within the next 48 hours.”

Lecornu resigned after facing problems in forming a government and developing plans to reduce the French budget deficit.
