In an official statement issued by New Zealand Cricket (NZC), Kiwi Rob Walter coach said they are disappointed to see Tom Latham excluded outside the match, but they emphasized that they will do their best to allow the leader to the second match. He clarified:

Walter said: “It is very disappointing for Tom to lose the first test, as a leader, and also an integral part of the team,” Walter said.

“It is never great when you lose your captain, which is the opening mixture on a global level and a great team man, but that he said we will work hard to make it available for the second test.

“We will continue to evaluate and know if the alternative player is necessary, but at this point we hope to recover in time.”

Rob Walter also said that Mitchell Santon has a strong understanding of the game and supports him to do a great job as a test leader. He said:

“Mitch did a great job with the T20 team in this last series. It was excellent from a strategic point of view and has a strong understanding of the game.

“While coordination is different, it is certain that the players will be respected and they will be supported by some of the high experienced cricket players, so I trust that he will do a great job.”
