The Sudanese militia leader has been convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity for more than 20 years in the Darfur region.
Ali Muhammad Ali Abdel -Rahman, also known as Ali Koshaeb, led by Genjoid, a government -backed group that intimidated Darfur, killed hundreds of thousands of people.
KushayB is the first person to be tried by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for atrocities in Darfur. He argued that it was a state of wrong identity.
The conflict lasted from 2003 to 2020 and was one of the most humanitarian disasters in the world.
Five years after the end of that crisis, Darfur is a major battlefield in another civil war, this time between the Sudan Army and the Semi -Military Support Forces (RSF), whose assets lie in Janjaweed.
During the Koshayb trial, the survivors described how their villages were burned, the men and children were slaughtered and forced women to sexual slavery.
The militia leader was convicted on 27 charges, focusing on the attacks committed between 2003 and 2004.
Judges in the International Criminal Court found that the brutal Janjaweed tactics – including mass executions, sexual violence and torture – were caused by Koshap and his men.
Before the verdict, a small group of Darfuris waited for the patience of entering the court, in the Dutch city of The Hague.
They were undoubtedly about the pivotal role that Koshaeb played in their suffering, as one man said: “He was the one who gave orders. He was the person who got weapons.
“So if you ask me if it is important in Darfur, I will tell you that it was one of the most important of them.”
The Darfur war began after the Arabs controlled by the Arabs at that time, the arms of Janjaweed, in an attempt to suppress an uprising by the rebels from the black African ethnic groups.
Janjaweed systematically attacked non -Arab villagers accused of supporting the rebels, which led to genocide.
This systematic violence still occurs in Darfur as part of the civil war of Sudan.
Many Janjaweed fighters have turned into the RSF, the paramilitary group that is currently fighting the Sudan army.
The United Kingdom, the United States and RSF groups have been accused of carrying out ethnic cleansing against non -Arab societies in Darfur since the conflict began in 2023.
KushayB will be judged later.
