The growth of retail sales in China slowed in April, and data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed on Monday, indicating that consumption remains a source of concern over the second largest economy in the world.

Retail sales increased by 5.1 % from the previous year in April, and analysts estimated 5.5 %, according to Reuters poll. Sales grew by 5.9 % in the previous month.

Industrial production grew by 6.1 % year on April, which is stronger than analysts’ expectations for a 5.5 % increase.

Invested the fixed asset for the first four months of this year, which includes investment in property and infrastructure, by 4.0 %, slightly lower than analysts’ expectations for 4.2 % growth in a Reuters poll.

The urban surveyal unemployment rate in April decreased to 5.1 % from 5.2 % in March.

Data comes against the background of commercial tensions between China and the United States

US President Donald Trump put a tariff of 145 % on imports from China, which came into effect in April. Beijing took on customs tariffs, with 125 % of the fees on American imports.

The fears of the trade war fell after a meeting of trading representatives in the United States and Chinese in Switzerland earlier this month to a group less than the fees between the largest economists in the world.

Beijing and Washington agreed to decline most of the customs duties imposed on each other for 90 days, providing space for further negotiation to reach a more permanent deal.

This has prompted a large number of global investment banks to raise their expectations for economic growth in China this year while restoring expectations for more pre -emptive stimulation as Beijing seeks to reach the goal of its growth of about 5 %.
