The United Kingdom has agreed that Spain will verify the goods entering Gibraltar as part of a deal to remove border controls for people who move between tires, according to British and European officials.
A European Commission official said that Rock will be closed almost completely in front of the goods, and trucks and ships will need to stop at the Spanish customs near the border.
The European official added that the British region will also raise its sales tax from 3 percent to at least 15 percent within three years of ratification of the deal to avoid unfair competition with Spain as the value -added tax is higher.
The European official said that the Gibraltar authorities have supported the deal since almost all goods entered the ground, and changes from their citizens will allow them to travel without obstacles to Spain and work in stone areas.
A UK official confirmed that Gibraltar accepted the conditions of sales tax and that the goods that were imported to the region will be examined and disinfected by the European Union customs staff in Spain. The Gibraltar official did not comment immediately.
There will be exemptions from checks for certain products, such as cars that are imported, renewed and exported again – a major slice of Gibraltary. It will also be possible to charge the goods with a stop in the near Spanish port of Ghawarsh.
Gibraltar Port, which occupies a strategic position at the Mediterranean Gate, is one of the main assets for other reasons other than goods. It hosts the British naval ships, the luxury cruise and yachts, a major fuel center for ships that leave and enter the Mediterranean.
