Amazon Prime Video is increasingly becoming a bigger player in the ongoing streaming wars. It certainly doesn’t hurt for a streamer to find success with high-profile shows like “The Boys”, which has become a full-fledged franchise that includes several spin-offs. These are series with big names and big stars. However, sometimes a (relatively) smaller show can break through the hype and become a hit. This is the case with the “platform”.

Starring Ian Glen (“Game of Thrones”) and Emily Hampshire (“Schitt’s Creek”), Season 2 of “The Rig” recently premiered on Prime Video to kick off 2025. It quickly made its way into the Top 10 charts on Prime Video and It currently sits in fourth place in the US, per Flex Patrol. It also means it’s right above “Cross,” the new “Alex Cross” series, and ahead of “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” Both offers have great brand recognition. However, this British supernatural thriller manages to put itself in the mix with much larger franchises.

To this end, “Reacher” is also in sixth place ahead of the show’s third seasonwith other giants like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Fallout similarly in the mix. None of these programs can compete with Mr. Real-life Beast Games, which is firmly in first place. However, “The Rig” is the big surprise here.

The series revolves around the crew of a massive oil rig fighting for survival after a strange fog cuts off all communications. Stranded with few supplies, Magnus (Glenn) must guide his broken co-workers through the ongoing crisis. His increasingly desperate efforts to regain contact with the mainland fail as tensions rise, culminating in a devastating incident that brings them all face to face with the dangers of one of the most extreme working environments on the planet.

The Rig has been a steal for Prime Video

What’s amazing about this show’s success is what it says about the state of streaming. Amazon, in particular, has spent untold fortunes trying to achieve global success. The cost of the film “The Castle” by the Russo brothers was $ 200 millionFor example. Yes, it was a hit when it dropped, but was it big enough to justify that level of expense? The same could be said for “The Rings of Power,” which may be one of the most expensive shows ever produced, after all is said and done.

Meanwhile, “The Rig” is a Scottish series produced in the United Kingdom and created by an unknown writer named David Macpherson. Nothing about this screams “big hit.” While the budget hasn’t been revealed, it’s certainly much less expensive than many of Prime Video’s other premium offerings due to the lack of an A-list cast (among other things). Glenn, of course, is a very good performer best known for portraying Jorah Mormont in “Game of Thrones” and even playing Bruce Wayne in the DC Comics series “Titans.” However, it is reasonable to assume that he does not receive an outlandish salary.

Whatever the case, it’s clear that the series has gained a following over the past two years since its first season premiered. This was not an obvious attempt to string together a hit. Instead, an unknown writer had a compelling idea, found the money to bring their concept to life, and it slowly found its audience. Not that it’s a small indie production or anything like that, but this is kind of a “David and Goliath” story in the streaming age. So, don’t be surprised if the series gets a third season.

“The Rig” is now streaming on Prime Video.
