Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday that supplying Ukraine with American Tomahawk missiles could end badly for everyone, especially US President Donald Trump.

Medvedev said it was impossible to distinguish between Tomahawk missiles carrying nuclear warheads and conventional missiles after they were launched – a point also made by President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman.

“How should Russia respond? Exactly!” Medvedev said on Telegram, apparently indicating that Moscow’s response would be nuclear.

Trump said again on Sunday that he might offer up long-range Tomahawk missiles that Kiev could use if Putin does not end the war in Ukraine.

“Yes, I can tell Putin, if the war doesn’t get settled, it’s very likely we will,” Trump said. “We may not, but we might… Do they want Tomahawks heading their way? I don’t think so.”

“We can only hope that this is another empty threat… like sending nuclear submarines closer to Russia,” Medvedev wrote.

He was alluding to Trump Statement in August He ordered two nuclear submarines to approach Russia in response to what he described as Medvedev’s “highly provocative” statements regarding the threat of war.

Putin said that supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles – which have a range of up to 2,500 kilometers and can therefore strike anywhere within European Russia, including Moscow – would destroy US-Russian relations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine would only use Tomahawk missiles for military purposes and would not attack civilians in Russia, if the United States supplied them.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to make any further comment on Monday.

Peskov reiterated Moscow’s stated position that the use of such weapons would require the involvement of the United States.
