Traders on forecasting platforms Kalshi and Polymarket are betting that the Fed Government shutdown It will extend into next month, as the partisan gridlock shows little sign of easing.

As the standoff enters its third week, hundreds of thousands of federal employees remain on furlough ahead of the Senate vote on Tuesday.

Traders at Calci are giving a 65% chance the government lockdown will last until October 31, with around 52% betting it will extend just over 36 days.

About 44% of traders expect the government shutdown to last more than 40 days.

Trading volume, or the total dollar amount being bet on this market, is north of $8.1 million.

Massive layoffs have “begun” as the government shutdown continues

Meanwhile, 100% of traders on Polymarket expect the shutdown to last until at least October 15, with more than $2.6 million betting in the market.

In trading extending through November 15, the largest group of traders, about 26%, are betting that the government shutdown will last until November 16.

Prediction market odds provide a snapshot of traders’ expectations, not predictions of when the close will end.

At 12:01 a.m. ET on October 7, the federal government shut down, requiring agencies to furlough employees in non-essential roles.

These shutdowns are usually temporary. Once Congress An agreement is reached, and federal workers are reinstated and paid retroactively.

Last week, the White House said it had begun a sweeping reduction of its workforce.

An official from the Office of Management and Budget, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Fox News Digital on October 10 that the reduction would be “substantial“.

Since 1976, the US government has experienced 20 shutdowns.

The most recent, and longest in US history, occurred when a dispute over funding for Trump’s border wall shut down government operations for 34 days, spanning from December 2018 to January 2019.
