The December 20 attack in the central city of Magdeburg, which also left dozens injured, shocked the country and raised tensions over the fraught issue of migration.

Officials described the suspect as a 50-year-old Saudi psychiatrist with a history of anti-Islamic rhetoric and a sympathizer of the far-right Alternative for Germany party.

Authorities said the suspected attacker used emergency exit points to head onto the Christmas market grounds, where he accelerated and plowed into crowds, wounding more than 200 people in an attack that lasted three minutes. He was arrested at the scene.
