The Cuban minister resigns after saying, “There are no beggars in Cuba.”

The Cuban Minister of Labor and Social Security, Marta Elena Veto-Caprera, was forced to resign from her platform after she made comments in a parliamentary session that ran out of the beggars on the island run by communism.

The minister had said that there was no such thing as “beggars” in Cuba, and the people who passed the garbage, in his essence, were doing so in order to earn “easy money”, as it put it.

Her comments were widely criticized by the Cubans at home and abroad, and paid a response from the head of the island, Miguel Diaz Canel. She resigned shortly after.

The levels of poverty and food lack in Cuba increased as it continued to deal with a severe economic crisis.

Feitó-Cabrara made comments earlier this week in a session of the National Assembly, as she talked about people who begged and outperforming garbage boxes in Cuba.

It seems that they deny their existence, saying: “There are no beggars in Cuba. There are people who pretend to be begging to earn easy money.”

Moreover, people who were looking through garbage were accused of being “illegal participants in the service of recycling.”

A number of Cuban activists and intellectuals published a speech calling for its removal, saying that the comments were “an insult to the Cuban people.”

Then the Cuban President Vito Kapreira criticized in the parliamentary session – albeit without mentioning it by name – saying that the leadership cannot “act with waiver” or “not connected to the facts” of the people.

Cuban economist Pedro Monreale posted X saying that there were “disguised people as ministers” in Cuba.

Feitó-Cabrara has been accepted by the Cuban Communist Party and the government.

While the Cuban government does not publish official figures about the number of people who are pleading, the high number was intuitive for most Cubans amid the deep economic crisis of the island.
