In 2023, Sophie Helier Goldi, 37, and Rocky Goldi, 50, ended, Converting a friend’s home warehouse into a small house She was ready to start searching for their place together.
“If this is not to meet her, you may have ended up in a small hut,” Rocky told CNBC. “I have come a long way to get here, but I wanted to be a kind of house when we met. She had the same vision and it is not common to meet someone.”
“He also wanted to live outside the ground and the house,” Sophie added. “But he did not have this big big vision of all these buildings. He just wanted something simple.”
Sophie turned this warehouse shed that was used for storage in a small house.

The couple started their search on Zillow with a specific list of requirements that included “at least 10 acres of land” and located “deeply in the rural state of Kentucky”.
“We love old things and antiques, so we wanted a place with some history. We were already looking for one of the first place that had some history, and we did not really find wonderful things on Zillow,” Sophie says.
A local photographer connected the couple to the assumption, who found them a 37.5 -acre house for about 390,000 dollars. The property had wooden cabins of the nineteenth century that were combined to manufacture one house of 2200 square feet – with four bedrooms and one bathroom – one compartment of 200 square feet and two barns.
“I think I was waiting for my entire life to finally go home. There were elements of the shed that I felt, but this place was more than anything else, I felt in good health. The couple’s house contains a separate cabin and barns.

When the couple visited property for the first time, he was in a very bad condition. There was poisonous ivy in the front yard, the sidewalk was cracks, and there was rubbish everywhere.
But Sophie felt optimistic. “I knew that we would buy this house before we entered it,” she says. “I have seen all the promise. With me and my husband working in this place completely, within a few years, we can turn this place.”
“I knew it seemed terrible, but I was able to see below it,” she added.
Rocky was less confident, but he says he was affected by his wife’s enthusiasm.
“I thought it would be a lot of work and that it was beautiful,” he says. “Sophie was always talking about the positives and I was talking about the negatives, but she convinced me.”
“I think we are balanced with each other in this way. I am optimistic about coercion and pessimistic rock, but I knew that there is no way to shed here,” Sophie laughs laughing.
The property was very bad until Sophie and Rocky moved.

Sophie and Rocky closed the property in early 2024. The couple got a 30 -year mortgage with a minimum of $ 1,790.18 and planned to pay it in less than five years.
Since his move a year ago, Sophie and Rocky focused on renewing the home and property itself. The couple estimates that they spent about $ 13,000 so far: $ 9,000 on tools and $ 4,000 in the interior of the house.

Sophie says that when you look back in the first year of living at home, she divides her into two categories: work and their mentality.

“I think the first year was very difficult and it is difficult to return to this place, but it was also amazing and very exciting. There was an endless amount of things, but it was fun and exciting.”
Sophie and Rocky also added new things to the foundations such as a garden, many fruit trees, walnuts and more than 30 animals, including chicken, goats, guinea and cats.
In addition to the additions to the ground, the couple also began renovations at home, including the restoration of the kitchen, the bathroom and the organization of rooms throughout the house.
Sophie and Rocky do most of the renewal work on the property itself.

The two try to prepare themselves to be as self -solid as possible. They eat eggs from chicken in the barn and use milk from goats to make cheese, cream, and bread. Hope is to use the materials they get from the clearing to make their straw.
“We have our own eggs. We have fruits. This will be the first year that we will be, which I learned from one of our neighbors,” says Sophie. “One of the rooms we return to enter into a cane room, which will get someone to know the number of the most famous food ready to go.”
Now that the couple had lived on the property a little more than a year ago, Sophie says that the most important lesson she learned is the effect that a person can have on a piece of the planet.
“We have come here and now you can see how, as long as there are two people working here most of the time, you can take and change a very neglected place,” she says. “Now we see the quick abundance of all the works we put in it. It makes you think a lot about the influence we have on this planet, especially in harassing this Earth. It is a great responsibility because you have a lot of strength to do good or bad.”

For Rocky, the biggest lesson he learned is outside his career. The naval infantry has served for several years before moving to a maintenance profession, which spanned 20 years.

The task becomes your identity, and even if you have got a somewhat plan for how to live as we did, it was still frightening to give up this lifeline.” “When I left, I thought I might be sitting and thinking about what I would do at work today, but this never happened. The only thought I have now is why I didn’t do it soon.”
Sophie and Rocky have no plans to transport or sell their home in Kentucky.

“I look forward to the day when not all these huge projects and all the main things are one, and then we sit around Dai Fith and we stand our hobbies,” Sophie says. “I always want to continue learning and spend half a day in the end just sitting here and he is doing a hobby.”
Like Sophie, Rocky looks at the time he can simply enjoy his hobbies.
“I would like to read and learn something, so I would like to say that my goal is to reach the point I can do on a day of reading, learn something, then go to apply it in practice the next day,” says Rocky. “I sit and think about what my goal is, but it’s more than a feeling, and I have this feeling already where I can sit and feel peace only and there is no place in the world that I prefer to be. I think I am in the destination already.”
