Billionaire hedge fund manager Sir Chris Hohn’s charitable foundation has stopped making grants to US NGOs, saying it no longer understands the “US policy environment” for making donations.
The Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) said it would temporarily halt donations until authorities clarified “applicable laws and rules” related to foreign funding of US NGOs.
The fund, with assets of $6.1 billion, focuses its donations on child health and development, climate change, as well as sexual and reproductive health and rights.
In a statement posted on its website this week, the fund added that until the rules were clarified, it would “redirect its funding to non-US NGOs and restructure its contracts to be with non-US NGOs.”
Last month, Americans for Public Trust, a conservative nonprofit, accused the Chinese International Furniture Festival of putting “more than half a billion dollars into American activist organizations as part of a broader effort to push extreme climate and DEI policy on American soil.”
The move by the China International Furniture Fair comes as Donald Trump’s administration launched an attack on the non-governmental sector, which the US president claimed last year was full of “thugs and corrupt people.”
The president signed a series of executive orders targeting tax-exempt status for nonprofits and various causes funded by left-leaning groups. He accused donors such as George Soros and Reid Hoffman of funding “domestic terrorism.”
The attacks came as many small charities were already dealing with funding shortfalls, having had their federal funding cut for causes such as diversity and inclusion, climate change and foreign aid.
Hoon is one of the most famous hedge fund managers in the world, with a net worth of $11.1 billion, according to Bloomberg.
